I argue that traditional chemists follow Habermas's "System" model of Instrumental Rationality. Open chemists follow the "lifeworld" model of communicative rationalists. In order for the open chemists to receive legitimization by grant funders, they will need to rely on IR terminolofy to express the foundation of their movement.
