This is my first test and my most exciting or pressing question is how can I aggregate this and all of the other members of this elgg or do I say install? My goal is to give each of my 75 or so students a semester a blog and somehow only do it if it can be done in a way that I can actually follow what they're posting. And of course, I don't want it closed to only school members.. hopefully friends at other schools will post and also they will show parents... sometimes of course... I have so many questions!!

Susan, you can create a new "community" in Elgg which is basically a group. Then each individual student has their own blog (as you do), and they can post to the community blog. So you could create a community called "Semester 1 English" and then let any kids join that group. You can control membership to the community if you want. Of course the community blog has its own RSS feed for you to read when you need to.
Is that what you are looking for?
There are 'groups' and 'communities'. The groups allow you to post and restrict access where the communities are more public entities. There was also some talk about feedbooks a few months back, but i never checked into it in the new release. I'll get back to you.
I didn't know about groups. Where do you go to set up a group?
I also noticed that I can "post a new entry" on other people's blog area. Is that only because I am an administrator?
Arvind --- That must be because you are an admin...
Susan -- I think that Elgg does much of what you have been discussing with with Paul and Teb on Teachers Teaching Teachers... Group Blogs, personal blogs -- all in one space.
Thanks for joining us!

"I didn't know about groups. Where do you go to set up a group?" - you need to go to 'Your Network' then 'Access Groups'.
This functionality will enable you to set up groups of your friends - the group are then used to control access to various elements; files you upload, profile items, blog posts etc - when you create a group you will notice it appears in your access restriction dropdown box.
Susan - Arvind described the community functionality well. This is a handy way to bring together focused content, say by class.
"I also noticed that I can "post a new entry" on other people's blog area. Is that only because I am an administrator?"
Yes - it is really to allow the admin to edit inappropriate posts.
Something that can be missed - if you would like comments made on your blog emailed to you, go up to 'Account Settings' then scroll down until you see 'Receive messages' make this say 'yes' and all comments posted on your blog will be sent to you.
